The Bronx Renaissance
The Bronx for a while has been a borough marred by violence and burning. It’s been the poster child for urban blight and for the failures of the state. Yet in these few years, it’s become a site of renewal. The Bronx is rising from the ashes of urban blight and is entering a period of renaissance.
Much of this renaissance is being done by in own inhabitants. As the borough has grown the people in it have become more prideful of their roots. No more is the shame of answering where they're from. Many have made it their mission to create and catalog art in the Bronx. A good example of this is The Literary Bronx project curated by Prof Bret Maney. This is used as a way to preach the importance of the Bronx in the literary sphere. And an appreciation for its most recent creation in hip-hop.
There has also been a development boom with creations like the hip-hop museum. The construction on Jerome Ave and Mott Haven. There’s also been an industrial push in Port Morris and Hunts Point. The latter getting federal funds for new facilities. And a large landmarks like the Kingsbridge army will be seeing new life. As proposals will start by the end of September till January.
Finally, the borough is creating green space out of abandoned and blighted areas. The Harlem River Greenway will open up the water to the borough and create green space with a gorgeous view of the many ornate bridges in the area. Reimagine the Cross Bronx will cover the Robert Moses monstrosity of a freeway and replace it with a green space. This plan is still being studied thanks to a $2 Million budget from the Biden administration. But it’s expected to be proposed by next year with a not-so-hefty price tag and Aqueduct Park, which is a park built on the Croton aqueduct will get a Landmark status. This could also allow it to expand south and help it reconstruct the land bridge at Burnside Ave.
All in all, the Bronx is going through a big change for the better. As the borough creates these new features the older more established ones such as Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, and the botanical garden are maintained. And forget places like Peo’s Cottage, the Hall of Great Americans, and the Highbridge are restored.
The Bronx is on for a comeback in a big way.
